My Front Garden
I wanted to post something a little wilder, lighter mid-week. I pass it every day on my way in and out of the house and sometimes I just wander outside the front door to watch the bees or smell the sweet lavender, honeysuckle, and mint. Rose St Ethelberga adds a lemon, baby powder, old rose scent in the summer and the Sweet Box brings a sweet, rich perfume in winter.
This little patch of semi-wilderness makes my life a whole lot better and It’s the part of my garden I tend the least, it looks after itself.
There’s no right or wrong way to garden and front gardens don’t need to be carefully planted and manicured unless that’s what you really want. Anything goes, it just needs to bring you pleasure.
This overgrown, wild little patch is made up of builder’s rubble, homemade compost and tough plants. I can’t dig down more than a spades length before I hit solid limestone or some other long forgotten hard surface. My house is built on an old crew yard and was once home to cows.
Whatever grows at the front of the house needs to love sun and poor soil.
Lavender, globe thistle, sea holly, lemon balm, wild mint, olive trees in pots, soapwort, and ivy, honeysuckle and roses grow against the wall.
This is so beautiful! I could feel the joy and love coming from all those plants!
This is gorgeous! Inspired me to post about my little wildflower area - it’s not the prettiest & it’s wild but I love it 😍
